Remember that name, people! We see Kombucha tea brands popping up all over health/grocery stores, and it’s becoming the newest fad. So what is this crazy stuff that’s said to have all these health benefits?
I got an opportunity in January to go out to Bend, Oregon. This is where I met the owners of Humm Kombucha, Michelle and Jamie, and spent the next couple days touring the facilities and learning everything I could possibly learn about this company and the Kombucha tea product. I was absolutely blown away!!
I constantly talk about health being an expression of life. If you want to know how healthy you are, start by asking yourself and contemplating, “How well am I expressing life??” “Am I doing the things every single day that are bringing more happiness and love into my life??” “Am I making a positive impact on the world around me??” Bottom line: “Am I being who I truly am on a moment to moment basis??”
This is what Humm Kombucha is founded on. The two owners, Michelle and Jamie, have contemplated and capitalized on these concepts. They both have turned down other opportunities in their lives, that may have brought them more money and/or status, to build a company that would embody these life-enriching perceptions.
It was inspiring to me, being a small business owner, because I saw that if you stay true to who you are and are persistent in your goals: life will conspire and give you exactly what you need. I LOVE IT. Humm Kombucha is a real-life example. It’s a company that found a home in beautiful Bend, Oregon and now is planning to expand not only all across the States, but also to other countries as well.
I still haven’t answered the question of what actually Kombucha tea is and what are all these health benefits…sorry I get distracted when I’m inspired by others.
First of all, Kombucha may be new to us here in the States but it has been around for more than 2,000 years in ancient Chinese cultures. It’s made from sweetened tea that has been fermented by an organic, living culture called a SCOBY (symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast). What the hell does that mean?? — My thought exactly when I first heard it. Basically, speaking to the general public, it’s a living mushroom looking organism that sits on top of sweetened tea and converts it into a natural energy drink filled with enzymes, probiotics, antioxidants, and B vitamins! Cool!
What are the health benefits of drinking this loaded all-natural tea?? One last aside: If you’re familiar with the hit show “New Girl” and know the character Schmitty, I could just see Schmitty going around drinking Humm Kombucha, acting all proud talking about the “health benny’s” (short for health benefits) he is getting from his Kombucha tea. Had to throw that thought out there…. But anyways, the health benny’s that are associated with Kombucha is improved digestion, fighting harmful yeasts, immune support, increased energy, protects against oxidized cells, mental clarity, and mood stability. There ‘ya go, pretty slick!
I’ve started brewing my own Kombucha in the comfort of my own kitchen! This is also how Humm got started when Michelle started brewing Kombucha. She understands the power of intention, and used it to create a business that would reflect her intentions. Dr. Masaru Emoto put out a study in 1994 that explained the power of intention using experimentation of ice water crystals. Essentially, he had two types of water. One set of water was blessed with prayer, positive words, and love while the other set of water had the contrary. He froze this water and studied the crystalline formation of each of the water types and found (you can see pictures on his website) that the blessed water was beautifully designed and interconnected with unbelievable structure while the other water was brittle and weak. Michelle began to put these intentions behind the Kombucha that she would make. She would name each of the SCOBY’s because they were real living organisms, treated them with love, and even would sing and play music for them to enhance the brewing process. This is even true today as they are brewing in their much larger brewery. They have a specific room where the SCOBY’s live and call it the “Nursery”. The rooms are painted beautiful colors and meditation music is played each and every night while the SCOBY’s are working throughout the night. Being around the facilities and meeting the people who worked at Humm, I could tell this project was much more about making a tea with a fancy name. This was about spreading happiness and love to each and every person one bottle at a time.

Below I’ve listed some pics from the SCOBY I received from Jamie and the beginning of my brewing process!
(Here the SCOBY is the zip-lock bags! Received it in the mail.)
